THE UNDOING OF DOING

29th & 30th of March 2008

Join Nikki Massaioli, founder and director of Yoga to Go for a weekend of transformation. During the weekend, we will explore the relationship of action and reaction.

Through the practice of Yoga Postures, (Asanas), breathing exercises (Pranayama) and self study (Svadhyaya), we will begin to unravel the ties that bind us. In life we create habits; we are constantly doing. Yet, what if we stopped? What if you had an opportunity to be free and nurtured, with enough space to be able to reflect?

In a supportive and nurturing environment, we will learn to stop, let go and begin to develop an understanding of how our practice can not only support us through our life, but also how we can allow that practice to provide space, freedom and clarity to all areas of our life.

Yoga-to-Go’s Responsible Travel and Tourism Policy

Yoga-to-Go’s Australian and international retreats offer individuals the opportunity to enhance their health and well being in luxurious and natural surroundings.

This involves traveling to different destinations, each with their own unique environmental, cultural and economic conditions.

Our Responsible Travel and Tourism Policy is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the sustainability of each of the places we visit, and respect for those who live there. As part of every retreat we will:

• Minimise our global warming impact by making all our retreats carbon neutral.
• Protect pristine natural environments by not littering and respecting local vegetation, sea life and wildlife.
• Respect local customs and regulations by meeting all necessary dress and behavioural expections.
• Contribute to the communities we visit by buying local and through out philanthropic activities.

At Yoga-to-Go we value the people and places we visit though our retreats, just as we value the individuals who participate.

Below are a set of guidelines we apply to fulfill our policy guidelines.

Environmental Guidelines

Your participation in a Yoga-to-Go retreat will be 100% carbon neutral.

Included in the cost of each of our retreats is an accredited carbon offsetting program that we have been developed through the Australian company, Carbon Planet.

This means that we will calculate the amount of carbon dioxide that will be generated from your travel, accommodation and activities and offset this by investing in Carbon Planet’s fully certified carbon credit schemes. These include the purchase of, and caring for trees, and the installation of energy saving light bulbs and showerheads.

Each carbon credit purchased will see 1 tonne of carbon dioxide being stored for at least 100 years. Full details of how the carbon offsetting scheme works is available at www.carbonplanet.com

In addition to reducing our global warming impact, Yoga-to-Go requires all participants in our retreats to help protect the many different environments you will be experiencing. These include:

• No littering
• No touching or removal of coral
• No touching or removal of wildlife or sea life without permission or authorisation
• Minimisation of all waste.

We also use 100% recycled paper in all our course materials.

Cultural Guidelines

Most of our international retreats take place in Thailand where there are different rules and customs from Western countries.

As Thailand has a variety of cultures and religions there are certain behavioural and dress expectations that apply to the places you are likely to visit. For example, women can wear swimwear at the beach or around resorts, but topless bathing is generally not accepted. When visiting temples or other religious places, stricter dress codes apply such as covering shoulders and legs. It is important that all our retreat participants familiarise themselves with what is required and we will help with information and advice.

There are parts of Thailand, such as Patong Beach, where the rules and regulations are more relaxed. These areas tend to be busier and are more tailored to Western-style nightlife and shopping. Bartering for clothing and other items is an accepted practice in throughout the country.

It is important to tip staff in restaurants, cafes and hotels as the wages in Thailand are very low. We will assist you in understanding when tipping is appropriate.

In Australia, we have a Western culture where there are fewer restrictions on dress and some activities than in non-Western countries. However, it is important that our Australian retreat participants respect the local rules and regulations of each the places we visit.

Economic Guidelines

Our retreats only use accommodation, travel and tourist facilities that are locally managed and owned. We also ensure the staff working for these organisations are appropriately rewarded.

In the past, we have provided a percentage of our earnings from our retreats to local causes. For example, in the aftermath of the devastating Tsunami we contributed 10 per cent of takings to helping with the rebuilding of housing and infrastructure. We will continue to identify worthy philanthropic activities as part of our future retreats

As Yoga To Go grows, and we begin to broaden our community, we always refer back to the Petersham studio. The school is the base, the hub, the home.
While I travel abroad and embark on new adventures, I always like to return and teach at this studio – come back to my base. I am so buoyed up, therefore, by seeing how strong and steady the “student base” is becoming. I see regular students in the level 2 and 3 classes have grown both in strength and flexibility in their asana practice, but more importantly, have matured so well in the way they practice. To a teacher too, there is something so encouraging in seeing new students, beginners and level 1’s, eager to learn and having their first breakthrough – “Oh, so THIS is yoga!”
I recently taught a weekend workshop at the Sydney Studio that focused on “the Sum of the Parts”. We looked at the organs of action (the arms and the legs) and how the movement of the spine effected their actions and mobility, and inturn how the spine was effected by the arms and legs. The core to the exterior, the exterior to the core.
When writing the mission statement for Yoga To Go (please see web site), we started by looking at the Petersham studio and then applied what had been slowly and carefully cultivated there to everything else we do – retreats, workshops, special events etc. This is the core moving out.
In the same way, when we do something away from the school (be that our educating others with Yoga, or the continuation of our own personal practice and ongoing education), we also bring that experience back in and build upon it, sharing our experience with fellow teachers and in turn, you the students. This is coming back to the core.
This wonderful synergy, this sharing, this going out and exploring and then coming in and restocking make’s us rich and strong – a good recipe for a healthy community!
Until next we meet, Namaste!

I have been settling back into Sydney now for a week, after a blissful two weeks in Thailand. Our October retreat ran at the Twin Palms in Phuket and it shaped up to be an amazing week of transformation on every level.

The week was held in a space of practice, fun, laughter and friendship. It never ceases to amaze me that, when we remove ourselves from the business of our lives we enable our selves to unravel.

Rather than students running in from the busyness of their lives, taking a yoga class, filling up, and running straight into life again. The retreat offered an opportunity to be held in a space of freedom. Freedom to explore, what works in our life, what is not working in our lives. What it is like to practice yoga when we do not have our every day responsibilities and pressures. What is it like to practice yoga consistently, to let the gifts of a consistent practice emerge?

To me it is a time just for the individual. A gift of space and exploration. During the week I had the privilege of watching that un ravelling process for people, I watched the stress and the tiredness disappear, the lightness emerge not only in their eyes yet also in their practice.

The reality is that we were all taken care of, watered fed and loved, knowing this is not a space that many of us live in day in and day out, yet what it allowed was the opportunity to learn to do things differently, to try things that people would never normally do. And for that, the gifts at the end of the week are unfathomable.

Love is Light

On the 26th September a group of students and myself attended the Love is Light dinner held in Sydney. The evening was held to raise needed funds to buy Sunrise’s Siam Reaps home a commercial kitchen. Their goal was ambitious, they need industrial fridges, a hot water system, hygienic waste disposal, a cool room, storage space, stovetops and enough noodle bowls for close to 400 meals a day.

The evening was held by Geraldine Cox, who I find to this day one of the most incredible women I have ever met.

It was a reminder to me that an individual can make a difference. Her strength, courage and tireless self-service have provided hope, love and futures to hundreds of children through out Cambodia.

During the evening I was speaking to Geraldine, she commented that she would love to do Yoga; I looked at her and said you are already doing it.

I find so often peoples thoughts of Yoga is purely just the Asana {postures} yet what about the other 7 limbs?

All of us who attended the evening left with feelings of love, inspiration and a sense that there are so many small things that we can do in our lives to be more of service to our community around us.

For more information I highly recommend going to their website www.sunrisechildrensvillage.org

Yoga To Go was one of nine studio’s in Sydney to participate in one of the largest unified worldwide yoga events held to date, Through the collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108, we all formed a ‘mala’, or prayer, around the earth to raise awareness, and money, for some of the most seroious issues affecting millions of people and our environment.

We gathered down at Bondi Pavilion, with the sun gods blessing our path on such a beautiful Sunday afternoon. With a level of anticipation equaled with excitement we assembled on our mats ready to embark on 108 Sun salutations.

What unfolded was one of the most beautiful experiences, 108 people doing 108 sun salutations, united by yogis all over Sydney and beyond, one breath at a time we shared in spirit and union. I would like to thank all the people that created this incredible event and thank especially those of you from Yoga To Go that came and participated.
Sometimes it can feel like there is an imaginary divide between styles of yoga and different School of Yoga, yet there on the mat we all stood together in the unity of what yoga truly is.

Mala
A mala is a set of prayer beads popular in India and Tibet, commonly made from 108 beads. It is used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or name/s of a particular deity, a practice known in Sanskrit as japa. The word “mala” comes from Sanskrit and translates as “garland”.
Significance of the Sacred Number 108
Have you ever wondered why a typical beaded necklace from the East (called a mala) is always strung with 108 beads? You’ll find this to be the case not only in Hindu traditions, but also in Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and virtually any tradition that has its roots in India. In Japan, the Zen temple bells ring 108 times to bring in the New Year. Obviously this number is significant. By why not a more rounded number, like 100?
The early Vedic sages were renowned mathematicians and in fact invented our number system. 108 were definitely the number of choice for this simple reason: 108 represent the whole of existence. Here’s some interesting reasons why:

1. The number 9 represents wholeness and 108 when added together equals 9. 1+0+8 = 9. Interestingly, if you multiply 9 times ANY number, the answer is always 9 when you add the numbers together. Try it! 1×9=9. 2×9=18. 1+8=9. 285×9=2565 2+5+6+5=18 1+8=9. 8543×9=76887 7+6+8+8+7=36 3+6=9 The logic behind this is that 9 represents wholeness or God and God times anything is always God since God is all there is!
2. The 9 planets traveling through the 12 signs constitute the whole of existence. 9 x 12 = 108.
3. The universe is made up of 108 elements according to ancient texts. The current periodic table claims a few more than 108.
4. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth (give or take a few miles).
5. The average distance from the earth to the Sun is equivalent to 108 Sun’s in a row (give or take a few miles).
6. The average distance from the earth to the Moon is equivalent to 108 Moon’s in a row (give or take a few miles).

OUR VISION

Based on the passion of director Nikki Massaioli, Yoga to Go is a space for teachers and students to come together to educate, nurture and create a community where change can unfold.

Yoga to Go is committed to education because real empowerment comes through self-knowledge; to nurturing because we need more soul in the city; and to creating community because the pursuit of consciousness and wellness needs to be supported and celebrated.

Yoga to Go is committed to bringing about change for conscious living through the teaching of yoga

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Yoga to Go is a centre of health and wellbeing that is dedicated to the pursuit of balance and transformation.

Yoga to Go classes, workshops and retreats are centred on bringing about positive change within and without, for the individual as well as for the community, and are ideal for the absolute beginner, experienced practitioner and everyone in between.

YOGA TO GO STUDIO

Led by founder Nikki Massaioli, the centre considers yoga to be the key discipline in establishing a deeper, stronger, more conscious sense of self. The practice of yoga is supported and enhanced by the complementary disciplines of Pilates, nutrition, massage, life coaching and personal training.

As the name suggests, at Yoga To Go what you gain stays with you long after you’ve rolled up your mat and stepped back into the outside world.

Yoga will relax you. Yoga will centre your mind. Yoga will unravel tension buried deep within. But that is just the beginning…

Yoga will give you a stronger sense of who you are. It will develop your awareness of what matters and deepen your resolve and commitment to living consciously. Yoga will free you from limitations, giving you greater ease, freedom and joy for life. Yoga has that kind of effect.

Yoga to Go teachers are deeply committed to the practice of yoga and trained to the highest standard. Our teachers are at ease working with groups, individuals, or individual needs within groups. We are adept and willing to work with injury and other special needs. Our teachers pursue a personal practice daily and we seek out ongoing training regularly, as is in keeping with the traditional yoga lineage and the teachings of Joseph Pilates.

Yoga to Go is not affiliated with any religion or doctrine.

Yoga to Go offers: regular yoga and Pilates mat classes, specialist workshops and intensives, retreats held locally and internationally, corporate programmes, an extensive range of massage treatments and private tuition in yoga and Pilates.
The more regular the practice, the quicker the benefits will appear. A regular practice can be as little as once a week or as often as once a day.

YOGA TO GO RETREATS

WHO WE ARE

Led by founder Nikki Massaioli, Yoga to Go is a community of traditional yoga teachers from various lineages who are united in their passion for the transformational powers of yoga.

A renewed perspective, together with greater physical and mental freedom, can help us to move beyond old limitations and shift into a more empowered position in life.

Yoga to Go retreats are run in luxurious, custom-outfitted locations around the world, each hand chosen for its harmonious atmosphere. The teaching staff is trained to the highest standard and, over the course of a retreat, will nurture and instruct with sensitivity and determination. Students will feel encouraged, challenged and supported to move deeper within, wherever they may already be on their life journey.

Yoga to Go is deeply committed to the power of yoga to bring about positive change.

OUR VISION
